Dear Middle School Parents and Guardians,

I hope this email finds you well and enjoying your summer! If you are new to Allendale Columbia and this is the first communication you are getting from me, I want to welcome you to the AC community! We are eagerly planning for September, and we have some exciting things in store for the coming school year. My next communication will be sent out in early August, and it will contain all the information you will need for the upcoming year as well as a link to our calendar on MyACS. MyACS is the online portal where we keep important information you will want to know about AC and your student(s).

  • We have a teacher candidate for a new Middle and Upper School Art position who is visiting AC on July 6th. We'd like them to do a practice lesson with students, and then give them a chance to meet our visitor and get their feedback.  If we have any student volunteers interested in meeting the candidate tomorrow, Wednesday, July 6th at 9:45a.m., please fill out this short form to let us know they are coming. Thank you!

  • Summer reading  and supply lists are available. If you have any questions regarding either, please do not hesitate to reach out.

  • New 6th, 7th and 8th grade families will be soon hearing from Gwyneth Heuser, the Middle and Upper School Administrative Assistant, to set up meetings to schedule classes and answer any of your questions. This will take about 30 minutes and can be done anytime this summer as to work around your summer schedule. Please save the date of August 31st, for our New Student Orientation, as well as an evening event that same day for New Parent Orientation.

  • Schedules for returning students will be available in the system in August. Look for an email in late July that will allow our students to select their elective coursework for the fall and spring semesters. We have some exciting new elective choices this year, such as the music electives: “Finding your Voice”, or “Beat to your Own Drum”.  Also new to the selections are “Stock Market Game”, “Health and Wellness”, and “Geodesic Dome Building and City Planning”.  Stay tuned!

  • For our incoming 6th graders, most of their scheduling is done automatically as a majority of their coursework is pre-set.  By following this link, your children can make a key choice for their 6th-grade year around scheduling Band and/or Chorus. At Allendale Columbia, the structure of music and the significance of community in musical performance provides students with a sense of individual importance to the ensemble as a whole. Music education can motivate our students to become healthy, valuable, contributing members of society and our community, an essential component of the AC Middle School curriculum. In addition to a required semester-long foundational music course, we provide students with an opportunity to participate in Band and/or Chorus. No experience is required to do either; even beginners on a band instrument will have the opportunity to develop their skills in an ensemble that's right for them. We are also gathering a bit of information to better match your child with an advisor. While perfect personality matches are not the goal, we do try to pair them with advisors who share some of the traits they think would work best.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us, and we can set up a time to speak or meet in person over the summer. You can contact Gwyneth Heuser, the Middle School and Upper School Administrative assistant at gheuser@allendalecolumbia.org to set up a meeting with me. While meeting is not a requirement, I welcome any opportunity to sit down with parents and/or students to welcome them to the Middle School and answer any questions you may have - it’s my favorite thing to do at school over the summer! I’d also be happy to “Zoom-in” if your plans this summer do not involve being in Rochester. We are looking forward to seeing everyone back on campus in September!
Thank you,
